GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – (May 28, 2009) – Designer scrubs fashioned on behalf of Grand Prairie United Charities, Grand Prairie Arts Council and Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce were the big winners at the recent “Scrubs for a Cause” event at MedVance Institute’s Grand Prairie campus.

Each organization received a $1,000 check for being one of the top three best sets of personalized scrubs as voted by event attendees.  More than a dozen “designers” – national celebrities, along with area VIPs and community leaders, participated in the unique “Scrubs for a Cause” design challenge to help raise money for their favorite charities.

Grand Prairie Police Chief Glen Hill’s scrubs were designed with horizontal black stripes like a prison uniform, attracting the votes to earn $1,000 for Grand Prairie United Charities, which will use the money to help cover the costs of running a food pantry where demand has risen more than 30 percent in the past year.  The scrubs of Grand Prairie Arts Council Executive Director Libby Clawson were painted like an evening gown by a local artist, winning $1,000 for the Council, while Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce President Lynn McGinley utilized floral fabric add-ons to wow guests and collect the final $1,000 prize for the Chamber, which will spend much of the money on scholarships to entice high school students to attend local community colleges.

Following the balloting and naming of the three winning scrubs, each set of the personalized garments was sold to the highest bidder as part of a silent auction with the money awarded to the design teams’ designated charities.  Local charities benefiting from the silent auction included Grand Prairie Boys & Girls Club, The Troy Aikman Foundation, Court Appointed Special Advocates, The FC Dallas Foundation, Gene and Jerry Jones Family Charities, Genesis Women’s Shelter, Muscular Dystrophy Association Dallas Chapter, Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas, Methodist Health System Foundation for the Methodist Mansfield Medical Center Auxiliary and Grand Prairie Education Foundation.

Among the “designers” taking part in the artistic scrubs challenge were former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and head coach Wade Phillips, American Idol season 1 Top 10 finalist Nikki McKibbin, the FC Dallas Soccer Team, Grand Prairie AirHogs mascot Fighter Pilot “Ace” Bacon, the KXAS NBC5 News Team, WFAA ABC8’s “Good Morning Texas” hosts Gary Cogill and Amy Vanderoef and other community leaders.

Each participant received a pair of plain MedVance Institute medical scrubs to design, using the scrubs as the canvas for their creative imprint.  The personalized and adorned outfits were on display during a community reception hosted at the MedVance campus.

“We want to thank all of our ‘designers’ and the many charitable organizations on hand for MedVance’s inaugural ‘Scrubs for a Cause' event says Nancy Tedros, director of the Grand Prairie MedVance campus.  “Special congratulations to Chief Hill, Libby Clawson and Lynn McGinley for their winning designs and their contributions to three great organizations.”
