HOUSTON – (May 28, 2009) – Designer scrubs fashioned on behalf of the North Houston-Greenspoint Foundation, Klein Forest High School Art Department and Houston Area Women’s Center were the big winners at the recent “Scrubs for a Cause” event at MedVance Institute’s Houston North campus.

Each organization received a $1,000 check for being one of the top three best sets of personalized scrubs as voted by event attendees.  More than a dozen “designers” – national celebrities, along with area VIPs and community leaders, participated in the unique “Scrubs for a Cause” design challenge to help raise money for their favorite charities.

North Houston-Greenspoint Chamber of Commerce President Reggie Gray’s scrubs were designed with multi-colored handprints of members of his family, attracting the votes to earn $1,000 for the North Houston-Greenspoint Foundation, which will use the money on college scholarships for local high school students.  The scrubs of Klein Forest High School Principal Bill Lakin were adorned with famous masterpieces painted by art students, winning $1,000 for the school’s Art Department that will be help send students to Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and provide supplies for art students who cannot afford them. Also, Mixed Martial Artist Jason Sullivan presented hand drawn graffiti art scrubs to wow guests and collect the final $1,000 prize for the Houston Area Women’s Center, which will channel the money into counseling, prevention and other programs to handle the growing number of domestic violence calls.

Following the balloting and naming of the three winning scrubs, each set of the personalized garments was sold to the highest bidder as part of a silent auction with the money awarded to the design teams’ designated charities.  Local charities benefiting from the silent auction included The Moran Norris Foundation, Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, Houston Ballet Foundation, Dynamo Charities, Pecan Grove Hurricanes Youth Football Organization, Houston Children’s Charity and Inflammatory Breast Cancer Clinic at M.D. Anderson.

Among the “designers” taking part in the artistic scrubs challenge were Houston Dynamo President/GM and former Oilers quarterback Oliver Luck, country music star Craig Morgan, CEO of Space Center Houston (NASA) Richard Allen, Jr., the Houston Ballet, former Houston Texans fullback Jarrod Baxter, former Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons running back Winslow Oliver, Examiner Newspaper Group editor Charlotte Aguilar, and a host of local TV personalities and other community leaders.

Each participant received a pair of plain MedVance Institute medical scrubs to design, using the scrubs as the canvas for their creative imprint.  The personalized and adorned outfits were on display during a community reception hosted at the MedVance campus.

“We want to thank all of our ‘designers’ and the many charitable organizations on hand for MedVance’s inaugural ‘Scrubs for a Cause' event says Mark Stroeh, director of Houston North's MedVance campus.  “Special congratulations to Reggie Gray, Bill Lakin and Jason Sullivan for their winning designs and their contributions to three great organizations.”
