NASHVILLE, Tenn.  – (November 6, 2009) – Designer scrubs fashioned on behalf of  the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Lyric Frizzell Fund were the big winners at the recent “Scrubs for a Cause” event at MedVance Institute’s Nashville campus.

Each organization received a $1,000 check for being selected one of the top three best sets of personalized scrubs as voted by event attendees.  Over 25 “designers” – national celebrities, along with area VIPs and community groups participated in the unique “Scrubs for a Cause” design challenge to help raise money for their favorite charities.

Hadari, an elephant from the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, lent a hand – and foot – to the cause by decorating her scrubs top with a massive footprint and painting the pants with a small paintbrush, winning the Zoo a $1,000 check. The Vanderbilt University Cheerleaders also lead the voting for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by transforming their scrubs into a team uniform with appliquéd black, gold and white team colors. Nashville portrait artist to the stars, Corey Frizzell’s silver-fringed scrubs reflected his country music bloodline, attracting the votes to earn $1,000 for the Lyric Frizzell Fund. The money will help defray the costs of treatment for his daughter who is undergoing treatment at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for an aggressive and rare form of leukemia.

Following the balloting and naming of the three winning scrubs, each set of the personalized garments was sold to the highest bidder as part of a silent auction with the money awarded to the design teams’ designated charities.  Local and national charities benefiting from the silent auction included United Way of Tennessee, University Kidney Research Organization, Mercy Ministries of America, Nashville Humane Society, Cumberland Crisis Pregnancy Center, Craig Morgan Fund, Predators Foundation, The Well of Spring Hill, Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity, PROTECT, ECD Foundation, Magdalene Inc., Nashville CARES, Sichuan Quake Relief, University of Tennessee Davidson County 4-H, L.A.S. Therapy Network, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Second Harvest Food Bank, Nashville Sounds Foundation, Historic Rugby Inc., Susan G. Komen For The Cure Nashville Affiliate, CDC Music LLC, Glencliff High School, Nashville Symphony Association, Nashville Sounds Association and Titans Foundation.

Among the other “designers” taking part in the artistic scrubs challenge were country music stars Reba McEntire, Deana Carter, and Craig Morgan, singer/songwriter Billy Ryan, and American Idol Season 2 Contestant Corey Clark; local sports teams such as the Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders and mascot T-Rac, Nashville Predators Hockey Team, as well as player JP Dumont, Vanderbilt University Football Team, Nashville Sounds Mascot Ozzie; Actor Donald Faison; Nashville Chief of Police Ronal Serpas; Nashville Symphony; media personalities Jennifer Johnson, WSMV NBC4 Anchor; Lelan Statom, WTVF CBS5 Meteorologist; Stacy McCloud, WZTV FOX17 Entertainment Reporter; The Tennessean Columnists Heather Byrd and George Zepp; Edgar Award-Winning Author Steven Womack; Dr. Chad McClellan, Medical Director for the Country Music Marathon and Nashville Half-Marathon; Tonya Trotter, The Rymer Art Gallery Director; DJ Ron Slomowicz; Tosha Cole Clemens, Owner/Designer for LaBosh Handbags & Textiles Manager for Frederick's of Hollywood, and Glencliff High School.

Each participant received a pair of plain MedVance Institute medical scrubs to design, using the scrubs as the canvas for their creative imprint.  The personalized and adorned outfits were on display during a community reception hosted at the MedVance campus on October 29.

“We want to thank all of our ‘designers’ and the many charitable organizations on hand for MedVance’s ‘Scrubs for a Cause' event,” says Bob Ernst, director of the Nashville MedVance campus.  “Special congratulations to Corey Frizzell, Hadari the elephant and the Vanderbilt University Cheerleaders for their winning designs and their contributions to three worthy organizations.”
